  On April 27th, 2023, the "2023 Global Technological Innovation Forum of Stainless Steel, Nickel and Special Alloy New Materials for Energy" hosted by the People’s Government of Dainan Town, xinghua city City, Jiangsu Province, jointly sponsored by the International Nickel Association and Zhongguancun Stainless Steel and Special Alloy New Materials Industry Technology Innovation Alliance, and hosted by Jiangsu Xinghua High-tech Industrial Development Zone was successfully held in Xinghua, Jiangsu Province. Focusing on the theme of "new energy leads the new trend of material development", this forum conducted in-depth discussions on the development prospect of energy industry under the goal of "double carbon", new materials technology and application innovation of stainless steel, nickel and special alloys for energy, and proposed that the high-quality development of energy industry should be driven by material innovation.

  Chen Fengjian, secretary of Xinghua Municipal Committee of Jiangsu Province, shared his views on the development of stainless steel industry in xinghua city with three key words: self-reliance, self-confidence and self-improvement.
  One is self-reliance. The stainless steel industry in Dainan Town, xinghua city has entered the initial development stage since the early 1960s, and entered the rapid development stage after the reform and opening up. After 2000, it has undergone two transformations, and now it has entered a new stage of high-quality development, and has grown into a famous stainless steel town in China, a top 100 industrial cluster in China and a 100-billion-yuan industrial cluster specially cultivated in Jiangsu Province. In 2022, the output value of Xinghua stainless steel industry reached 45 billion yuan, accounting for 40% of xinghua city’s GDP. There are 50,000 Xinghua people producing stainless steel and selling stainless steel products, which is the process of Xinghua stainless steel industry’s self-reliance.
  The second is self-confidence. Stainless steel industry is the most qualified and basic industry in Xinghua, which is ahead in realizing high-level scientific and technological self-reliance and self-improvement according to the proposal put forward by the Supreme Leader General Secretary to Jiangsu. After two renovations, Dai Nan cleaned up 353 enterprises, eliminated nearly 700 medium frequency furnaces, and retained 33 enterprises. Nowadays, they start to innovate from raw materials, aiming at the products that big steel enterprises are unwilling or disdainful to do, and carry out integrated processing. Although the market is small, the annual output may be only one or two thousand tons, but it is very important to the national industrial system. We will give full play to our advantages and proceed confidently in developing special alloy materials.
  The third is self-improvement. We are willing to work with all walks of life to tackle key problems around some "stuck neck" technologies and imported products.
  Form an independent and controllable industrial system. To this end, Xinghua Municipal Party Committee and Municipal Government will promote it from several aspects: First, make a good plan and choose the right development direction; The second is to set up a high-level expert Committee to take the pulse for development; The third is to plan a high-quality industrial park; Fourth, strengthen cooperation with relevant scientific research institutes, universities, associations and key enterprises. The government guides enterprises to carry out project public relations with problem-oriented and market application as the main direction, and solve the problem of technological upgrading with market-oriented forces.
  Du Wansheng, senior chief expert of China Steel Research Technology Group Co., Ltd. and chairman of Zhongguancun Stainless and Special Alloy New Material Industry Technology Innovation Alliance, said in his speech that the energy problem has been concerned for a long time in the world. With the increasing global climate change, sustainable development has become the focus of national policies, and many countries have joined the "decarbonization" plan, thus reducing atmospheric pollution and promoting environmental protection and sustainable development. Policymakers in various countries also vigorously promote sustainable development in the energy field.
  Du Wansheng pointed out that stainless steel, nickel and special alloy new materials are one of the most advanced metal materials at present. Stainless steel and nickel have many advantages in the fields of energy and environment and are widely used. Special alloy materials play a very important role in the use of harsh conditions such as high temperature, high pressure and strong corrosiveness. With the rapid development of global energy industry, especially in the field of new energy, higher performance requirements are put forward for new materials such as stainless steel, nickel and special alloys, and long-term and in-depth research and exploration are needed in material preparation, processing and performance testing to meet the needs of energy application and development. The theme of this forum is "new energy leads the new trend of material development", hoping to build a wide communication platform for the upstream and downstream of energy industry chains such as "design and production end of energy equipment" and "R&D and production end of new materials of stainless steel, nickel and special alloys", promote the close cooperation of colleagues in the industry, drive the high-quality development of energy industry with material innovation, and drive the material innovation with high-quality development of energy industry.
  Song Quanming, the chief representative of the International Nickel Association in China, pointed out in his speech that the theme of this forum focuses on the technological innovation and application of global stainless steel and special alloys for energy, which is very in line with the vision and goal of green, low-carbon and sustainable development in the world and China.
  He said that energy is one of the most important sources of human co emissions. Based on the International Energy Agency’s (IEA) plan for sustainable development of carbon reduction from 2020 to 2070, clean energy, including renewable energy, such as wind power, hydropower, solar energy, photovoltaic, geothermal energy, biomass energy, hydrogen energy, etc., and carbon capture, utilization and storage technology, is the main path to realize energy transformation, which can effectively reduce carbon emissions and avoid the survival challenges and serious harm brought to mankind by the global greenhouse effect. Nickel-containing stainless steel and special alloys not only provide strong technical support for material application for energy transformation technology, but also play a key role in many clean energy technologies. As an international non-profit trade organization in the field of global metal resources and materials, the International Nickel Association will uphold its mission and devote itself to promoting and supporting the accelerated development and innovative application of advanced materials technology on a global scale.
  In his speech, Yin Jun, deputy secretary of Xinghua Municipal Committee and mayor, focused on the overall development, industrial base and investment environment of xinghua city, especially the development process and major achievements of stainless steel industry in Dai Nan.
  He pointed out that Xinghua is a treasure trove of geomantic omen, a dynamic new city with great strength and potential, and a fertile ground for investment and Yixing industry to create wealth. The development of stainless steel industry in Dai Nan began in 1960s. After several generations’ continuous struggle, it has become an important sector in the field of stainless steel products in China, with a more complete industrial chain and a leading characteristic cluster by resolutely removing inefficient production capacity, persistently upgrading industrial energy level and firmly developing the layout in the long run. Looking at the development of stainless steel industry in Dai Nan, the legendary story of stainless steel rebirth is deduced, the vivid practice of stainless steel chain gathering is created, and the new chapter of stainless steel transformation is continued.
  Yin Jun said that Xinghua has the perseverance of innovation-driven development and the ingenuity of fully serving development.   Liu Zhengdong, academician of China Academy of Engineering and chief expert of Iron and Steel Research Institute, gave a keynote speech on "New Demand for Alloy Materials in the Transformation and Development of Energy Industry".
  Based on the main problems existing in the transformation of China’s energy industry, Academician Liu Zhengdong systematically analyzed the key entry point and technical roadmap for China’s steel industry to achieve peak carbon dioxide emissions and carbon neutrality, and pointed out that the current steel industry is facing constraints such as resources, emission reduction and environmental protection. Recently, the hard demand for steel and high-end demand are intertwined, and it is expected that the hard demand will be greatly reduced in the future, and a batch of steel production capacity will be forced to disappear from the market. We should realize that occupying the global market with high-end metallurgical materials is the way to become a metallurgical power. In recent years, China’s steel industry has continuously strengthened scientific and technological innovation and vigorously promoted the development of high-end steel materials and metallurgical technology. However, at present, the road to becoming a strong country in special metallurgy still has a long way to go and still needs unremitting struggle.
  In his report, Academician Liu Zhengdong introduced in detail the recent typical platform-type technological progress in the field of stainless steel and special alloys in China, such as RKEF+AOD technology to change the structure of stainless steel industry, G115 material technology to reshape the upper temperature limit of ultra-supercritical power stations, and studied and predicted the key demand for alloy materials in the energy industry transition period from 2025 to 2035. He emphasized that major projects in the rising and prosperous period of the country are the most important driving force for the research and development and engineering of key materials, and the foresight and persistence of outstanding engineering experts are extremely important. Key materials and high-end manufacturing technologies are important supports for building a manufacturing power.
